Types of Mesothelioma

The three main types of mesothelioma are: 1) Pleural mesothelioma, 2) Peritoneal mesothelioma, and 3) Pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the pleura or lung lining) is by far the most common type making up about seventy five percent of all cases. Another type is Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis Testis which is so rare there have been less than 100 all time documented cases.

Pleural mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. It accounts for about 75% of all types of malignant mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, called the "pleura". The "pleura" are fibrous sheets that help to protect the lungs. They produce a lubricating fluid that allow the lungs to move smoothly as we breathe. Because pleural mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, some doctors misdiagnose the disease as lung cancer. Lung cancer, however, is different from pleural mesothelioma because lung cancer is a malignant tumor that originates in the lungs itself.

Peritoneal mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is a cancer in the lining that surrounds the heart, called the pericardium. The pericardium is composed of cells that produce a lubricating fluid that protect the heart. They allow the heart to move freely when.

Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis

Mesotheliomas of the tunica vaginalis are very rare tumors that start in the covering layer of the testicles. This layer is actually an outpouching of peritoneum into the scrotum.
