Asbestos Exposure in Aircraft Carriers
Aircraft carriers are regarded as vulnerable to attack by other ships, submarines, aircraft, or missiles as they lack firepower of other warships. Therefore, these aircraft take trips as part of a carrier fight team for their safeguard. The aircraft carriers are purposefully designed for deploying and recovering aircraft. As aircraft carriers allow the Navy to project air power long distances, the Navy doesn’t have to depend on local bases in order to stage aircraft functions.
Asbestos was extensively used in aircraft carriers due to its excellent heat-resistant and fireproofing properties. The cancer-causing substance was especially used for insulation. Almost all products situated near and in engine rooms contained asbestos. Naval ships built before the 1980s contained asbestos in almost all their parts.
