Shipyard Exposure
Shipyard workers are at high risk of developing asbestos-related disease because they would have been heavily exposed to asbestos before the 1980s, especially during World War II. Some of the useful properties of asbestos, such as heat and corrosion resistance, made it ideal for use in ships. Asbestos was used as insulation for boilers, furnaces, steam pipes and hot water pipes. In these areas and many other improperly ventilated areas of the ship, hazardous asbestos-contaminated dust was built up over time and often impossible to avoid.
In addition to ship builders, sailors and the longshoremen were also frequently exposed to asbestos.
Longshoremen loaded bundles of asbestos onto ships before the 1980s, and because the hazards of asbestos were not fully known before that time, workers didn’t take any safety precautions to prevent the inhalation of asbestos fibers. As a result, shipyard workers are at high risk of developing Mesothelioma and other diseases linked to asbestos exposure.
According to a study conducted by Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, 86 percent of shipyard workers with more than 20 years experience were exposed to asbestos.
