Asbestos Exposure in Submarines
In submarines, products containing asbestos were commonly used in fireproofing and insulation for boilers and steam pipes.
Navy personnel working on or around submarines were potentially exposed to asbestos and the close quarters on submarines only increased the risk of asbestos exposure for workers and sailors. Those making repairs to submarines were particularly at risk. Many veterans who had worked in submarines have developed Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses as a result of their past exposure to asbestos fibers.
