Longshoremen are dock workers who perform services under the direction of a terminal operator or stevedoring company such as operating equipment, rigging cargo or administrative tasks associated with the loading or unloading of cargo. Longshore crews are hired by stevedoring firms to work the ships. Longshoremen are also called stevedores.

Cargo like cables, building and construction material, packing material, wire and cable, floor tiles, shingles, and adhesives contain asbestos. Some packing materials used in flanges were made of asbestos.
Longshoremen are employed by ships to load and unload the cargo on the ship. The nature of Longshoremen occupation makes it easier for them to inhale asbestos particles from any of the above mentioned sources. Ship workers don’t were protective gear normally. So, the chances of direct exposure are extremely high.
Longshoremen may be exposed to asbestos from two sources: from the materials used in the ship and from the cargo they handle.
