Longshoremen

Longshoremen are dock workers who perform services under the direction of a terminal operator or stevedoring company such as operating equipment, rigging cargo or administrative tasks associated with the loading or unloading of cargo. Longshore crews are hired by stevedoring firms to work the ships. Longshoremen are also called stevedores.

Longshoremen and Stevedores and Asbestos

Asbestos was a commonly used material in shipping industry. Asbestos containing materials was widely used on board Merchant marine and Naval vessels. It was mainly used as insulation. Asbestos was used to cover steam pumps, compressors, gaskets, ship turbines, pipes, condensers and cement used on boilers. All those products were used to preserve and handle hot water, fire, steam used as fuel in the ship, contained asbestos.

Asbestos was also found in profusion in shipyards where ships were being built and maintained. Sometimes, even the freight that was going into the ship or leaving it contained loose asbestos particles. Cargo like cables, building and construction material, packing material, wire and cable, floor tiles, shingles, and adhesives contain asbestos. Some packing materials used in flanges were made of asbestos.

Longshoremen are employed by ships to load and unload the cargo on the ship. The nature of Longshoremen occupation makes it easier for them to inhale asbestos particles from any of the above mentioned sources. Ship workers don’t were protective gear normally. So, the chances of direct exposure are extremely high.

Longshoremen may be exposed to asbestos from two sources: from the materials used in the ship and from the cargo they handle.

If you or a loved one that is employed in anything relating to the longshore industry, and has suffered from asbestos-linked health issues, you may be entitled to medical benefits, compensation for lost wages, and compensation for sufferings as per Longshore and Harbor Workers Act.
