Coldfoot Environmental Services Inc., an asbestos abatement company headquartered in Anchorage (AK), will pay a $5,100 fine and do community services project to settle violations of federal asbestos regulations.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials the company failed to give proper asbestos-related notifications to inspectors who visited three demolition sites in Alaska. The Harborview Hospital in Valdez and two warehouses in Valdez and Juneau were the sites visited by the inspectors. The agency said the lack of notification made it hard for the EPA to perform prompt inspections.

Marcia Combes, EPA’s Alaska office director, said it is vital to inform the EPA regarding asbestos jobs so that they can have prompt and accurate information to carry out their inspections and ensure contractors are following the asbestos regulations.

In their community service project, Coldfoot will remove asbestos insulation from a boiler and piping in the building owned and occupied by ‘Out North’, a nonprofit multi-arts organization offering a vibrant mix of contemporary visual, performing, literary and media art, and engaging in arts activism, human rights. The estimated cost of the project is $14,800.
