Maxham Elementary School Closed over Asbestos Concern |
Fri 5/1/2009
Taunton – Officials said that Maxham Elementary School will remain closed for a second immediate day following the discovery of asbestos, a potential carcinogen, in the building.
According to Mayor Charles Crowley, initial tests didn’t indicate any threat to public safety. However, he is waiting for final written confirmation before the school to re-open.
“Everything looking good, however we are waiting for the written documentation,” Crowley said.
School officials said that Saturday, May 9 and Wednesday, June 24 will be the make-up days for Maxham students.
Make-up days will create an additional expenditure as the school district will have to provide transportation and extra pay for teachers, said Superintendent Arthur W. Stellar. However, he was not sure how much would be the additional cost.
Wednesday, city building inspectors had found that some asbestos insulation on a pipe was about to peel. Following this, Crawley decided to close the school so that additional tests and inspections could be performed in the building.
“This is entirely precautionary. We want to ensure we have it in writing,” Crowley said.
City officials will determine if the school can re-open once the final written report has been available.
