The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs sanctioned a $3.7 million in federal grant money to the N.H. Veterans’ Home for finishing two energy-efficiency projects it was already working on.

The grant will be will be used for asbestos abatement and a geo-thermal energy initiative.

According to NHVH Program Information Officer Jackie Bonafide, the grant will cover 65 percent of the total cost of both projects. Bonafide said that the rest would be paid by state of New Hampshire.

“The staff at home wants to make it feel more like a home than a hospital,” said Bonafide. He said that the home is also planning to replace old linoleum tile with industrial-strength carpet and artificial wood flooring.

Though the use of asbestos has been restricted now-a-days, asbestos is still present in almost all building. As asbestos is a known carcinogen, it has to be handled with utmost care. If the material is broken, its tiny fibers will become airborne. Inhalation of these fibers can have deadly effects. It may cause terminal diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. Therefore, only licensed professionals are supposed to handle asbestos abatement.
